Japan, the fourth largest island nation in the world, with the main islands of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. This modern industrial nation is located in Asia on the edge of four tectonic plates (the North American Plate to the north, the Eurasian Plate to the west, the Philippine Plate to the south and the Pacific Plate to the east). No wonder, then, that earthquakes (sometimes accompanied by tsunamis) are common in Japan.
