Amber – the gold of the north, tears of the gods. Amber is not only interesting to jewellers – insects and other small animals have sometimes been trapped in the fossilised tree resin and survived for millions of years – silent witnesses to a bygone era.
The poster Life in Amber shows a small selection of the diversity found in Baltic amber.
Most of the fantastic photographs come from the Geoscience Centre in Göttingen, which now houses the scientifically significant Königsberg Collection, started over 150 years ago. Two-thirds of the animals preserved in Baltic amber are flies and mosquitoes. But ants, spiders, cicadas, aphids, caddisflies, beetles and many other animals also fell victim to the amber resin traps.
