Polar lights are among the most impressive luminous phenomena in the night sky.
This poster on this natural phenomenon was developed in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy. The main motif shows a very intense aurora borealis photographed above the Polish polar research station on Spitsbergen. This publication was developed with the aim of explaining the processes involved in the formation of an aurora clearly and concisely and placing them in a context that is understandable to non-physicists. Terms such as solar wind, magnetosphere and ionosphere are discussed and explained with the aid of sketches. Some images from NASA and ESA were used for illustrative purposes.
