"Webb's First Deep Field" is the name given to the first image released by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) after its launch from Earth in December 2021. The image, taken with a near-infrared camera, shows the SMACS 0723 galaxy cluster 4.6 billion light-years away in the constellation Flying Fish and was created in more than 12 hours as a composite of several images taken at different wavelengths.
At the same time, the JWST was able to capture light from even more distant galaxies, which has travelled an incredible 13.1 billion years and was thus emitted "only" 700 million years after the Big Bang.
