Giovanni Maria Cassini lived from 1750 to around 1824, mainly in Rome, and was one of the great Italian cartographers. His atlas of the Earth from 1792 was based on the latest scientific findings and already included the results of James Cook's voyages of discovery.
The celestial atlas from the same year took into account the star catalogues of Flamsteed and de la Caille and was thus up to date with the latest developments in astronomy. The atlas also contained segments, together with instructions on how to assemble them to form a globe with a diameter of approx. 34 cm, i.e. larger than this version.
The Cassini Star Globe is a decorative and informative star globe from a time when great importance was attached to artistic design, even in highly scientific publications.
