The invention of lithography in the 19th century revolutionised map production. The schematic nature of woodcuts and copperplate engravings gave way to the colourful appearance of drawn maps – yet still in large print runs. The ROYAL combines the nostalgic feel of old map styles with current data. Its warm map image meets the political world view of our day. In 2015, it received the German Manufacturer's Seal as Manufacturer's Product of the Year, and in 2018, the ITB travel fair awarded it the Book Award for outstanding journalistic achievements. The ROYAL: 21st-century scientific expertise in 19th-century garb.

OID - optical image decoding: what's behind this technology?
This globe offers the option to read a code using the sensor on the tip of the optional Columbus Audio/Video-Pen OID . This code is linked to various audio or video files. When tapped on the globe, the pen detects the code and plays the appropriate file via the built-in speaker (or via the headphone output).
