This poster shows the 70 most important bird species up to the size of a jay that can be found in Central European gardens. The term "garden birds" refers to a colourful mix of all related species that can be found in gardens. Most of them are songbirds, with the exception of the great spotted woodpecker. Magpies and jays are songbirds in the biological sense.
The list was compiled based on the NABU Garden Bird Watch campaign, in which all garden birds observed within an hour once a year can be reported to a central location.
Water birds are not included on the poster.
Each bird is labelled with its common name and scientific name, as well as information on its distribution, habitat, migratory behaviour, diet, song and the number and colour of its eggs.
Information on how to identify each bird is provided. Where necessary, males and females are shown.
Many birds have become rare, mainly due to the destruction of their habitats and, in the case of garden birds, the felling of old trees, the lack of protected nesting sites and the thoughtless thinning and cutting back of hedges.
Almost all birds were photographed at the Zoological Museum of the University of Göttingen. These are preserved animals that died either of natural causes or in accidents.
